Going a little too far you think?

Very few things in the news get me excited enough to actually sit down and write about it. Mostly because I know that the news is all about selling papers, or getting you to stick around until 11. Most of it is dramatized stories, or facts taken out of context, that don’t really inform me, but fuel the fires of my cynical viewpoint.

One story that I found on Twitter, really struck a chord because even though I know that it’s all about these people getting more press, I don’t think they really realize what it’s doing to their image.

During an interview President Obama swatted at a fly, and killed it. (Hey North Korea, you better watch it) I thought it was pretty darn good that Obama actually got the bug, and I found the whole incident humorous.

Well apparently these PETA morons saw this and found it offensive. Excuse me? Killing a fly is wrong?

So again, I realize that they are just trying to get their name in the press again, but I think there’s a limit to the old axiom “Any press is good press”.

By coming out against killing the fly, these morons are not saying, “join our noble cause because we’re saving animals”. They are saying “Look how stupid we are. We don’t know the difference between bad press and good press” and “You too can look like an idiot if you join our cause”

I mean where do you draw the line? If you are a member of PETA are you not supposed to kill a mosquito? What about the microbes that live on your body? Can you not wash your hands anymore? Can you not take a shower?

So they may think that their strategy worked. I’m talking about them. But in my mind it just cements the image that these guys are a bunch of wackos with too much time on their hands, trying to come up with any way possible to promote their cause. They may think that the increased press might gain them a few more members, but my bet is on the other way around.

  1. Amen, PETA is plain “out to lunch” on common sense.

  2. I agree as well. They go too far when they’re suppose to be promoting wellness for animals. Their tactics are juvenile, not at all thought provoking. Which only further makes them a joke, turning possible members away.
