Good Samaritan Deed for the day

This morning the wife and I were out for our 3 mile walk when I saw something pretty funny. Two men were trying to load a riding lawn mower into the back of a Honda pickup. Why they call it a pickup, I haven’t quite figured out yet, but that’s another story. I mean, I could probably fit that truck in the bed of my old Dodge Ram long bed, but I guess you could probably put a potted plant in the back.

So there was an older gentleman kind of standing around, while a young guy was trying to push the riding lawnmower up the back of a box spring mattress that was leaned against the tailgate. Based on the weight of the mower, I knew that the box spring would never hold it, let alone the fact that the guy couldn’t push the mower up the steep bed ramp concoction.

I walked up and told them the bed frame would never hold, and the young guy told me he didn’t have anything else to use as a ramp. I told him that the three of us could easily lift the mower into the back of the bed to which the older gentleman said that he couldn’t lift it because he had heart surgery. I looked at the young guy and told him that the two of us could do it. I think he was skeptical, and he was also worried about scratching his truck, but we put the front wheels on the tailgate, lifted the rear, and shoved it in the back of the vehicle.

It wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t that bad either. They were both so happy that I had stopped to help, thanked me profusely, and talked about how amazingly lucky they were that I stopped to help.

The way I look at it, the only way we’re going to get the country out of the mess we are in, is to help each other, and whether that’s lifting a lawnmower into the back of a truck, or helping your neighbor shovel the snow off his sidewalk, remember, we’re all in this together.
